Matt's Thoughts:
- "Avoid any shit-kicking
guitar, Jenn" I muttered upon our first meeting about the music. Jenn
replied with "What's that?" thankfully, not knowing what the heck
I was meaning. Gladly she stayed away from anything close to what I didn't
want. This was Jenn's second score for one of my films and boy was it going
to be different than the last -- light, folksy, country americana with a
transparent quality to it. The Librarian, her first film score, was
dark and creepy, psychological and dissonant, the exact opposite tone of
this film. The editing was moving along very quickly and I began giving
her scenes to write the music for. The exchange was the world's worst MIDI
files representing what each cue would sound like. They were enough to give
me an idea, but I still remember asking Jenn at the record session "There's
a guitar in Scene 3/4?". Luckily it all sounded really great and the
musicians did a fantastic job jumping in after a quick "hello"
upon arriving at the studio. Thankfully we also had a truly fantastic studio
to record in, DB Digital, which was perfect for what the music needed. Thanks
for adding the musical "icing" on the cake again, Jenn. A very
sweet one it is. You're the best... as always.
Jenn's Thoughts:
- I burst out laughing
when I read Matt's thoughts to the film. This was a really fun project and
it went really fast...the writing did at least. I downgraded my equipment.
I don't think it gets anymore prehistoric other than pen and paper (but
I do that anyway). I wrote the music for this film using a floppy disk on
my 5 track so-outdated-they-don't-make-it-anymore keyboard and sent the
midi files to Matt. I told him that in order for this to be successful,
his new mantra needed to be "Use your imagination...." My favorite
cue has to be the last one which was born out of an exhausted 5 minute brain
fart at midnight. Emma, our flute player cracked me up when she told me
about a comment her husband made. Something to the extent of "That
sounds very Asian" (I can't remember which cue she said he was referring
to). At which point, she said something like "Oh really? That's strange
because I think the composer is Asian". I thought it was hilarious
but then Matt winced and said "It's not suppose to sound Asian".
Bryan was wonderfully meticulous... the musicians were inspiring...it was
inspiring actually. So very cool to finally work with Amy on a project.
Everybody was sad about what happened to Robert...myself included and I've
never even met Robert yet. I thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity, to be
in a studio again after hiding in a cave and I relish the fact that besides
Matt, I'm the only one who gets to comment on this page.....so let me take
full advantage and sing you a song....la la la la la la la....(of course
you'll need to use you imagination)
